Learning Autogenic
Training
You learn Autogenic Training best in a class setting of up to ten participants who meet weekly for six to ten weeks under the guidance of a qualified instructor. Each weekly session should last about 90 minutes.
A class setting has the following invaluable advantages:
Having a certain date and place to go to learn Autogenic Training keeps you motivated.
You can share your individual experiences with Autogenic Training during your practice in class and at home. Thus, you help others to stay motivated and you encourage them to express their own experiences.
You can ask questions in regards to individual training obstacles like lack of motivation and tap into your co-students problem solving skills.
An experienced trainer is handy to give you answers to your particular questions, helpful explanations, individual instructions and suggestions.
If you do not have access to a class, you have two options: 1. purchase the Self-Study Program: This program consists of six CDs (one for each of the six standard phrases) and of six booklets with detailed explanations to each phrase, detailed instructions, and solutions for common questions. Additionally, you are entitled to personal email-support. Therefore, the self-study program comes as close to a class setting as possible!
Note: The Self-Study Program emphasizes strongly that you use the CDs initially and that you make yourself independent from them as soon as possible. Remember one of the greatest advantages of Autogenic Training: You do not need any equipment and you can apply it anywhere you are, in a crowded subway or in your office.

Each e-course runs for six weeks. Each week, you will receive one booklet
with detailed instructions and explanations, sent to you as PDF via email;
you also receive each week several mp3 files that you can save onto your hard drive. Moreover, you
have access to an online forum to post questions and comments. Additionally,
you can chat with the instructor via instant messaging on an as-needed
basis.
You learn Autogenic Training in steps . . . After an introduction into the essence of Autogenic Training, its origin, and its rationale, you start learning the sixstandard phrases of Autogenic Training in a state of passive concentration, and you do so in steps: one phrase in each subsequent session.
…and cumulative
The effects of these six steps are usually cumulative, i.e. the warmth phrase increases the sensation of heaviness, and the heart phrase increases the sensation of heaviness and warmth, etc. Consequently, you learn the phrases cumulative: One phrase per session with the repetition of the previous phrases. For example, in the third training week, you learn the heart phrase but repeat the heaviness and the warmth phrase of the previous two sessions.
Homework The more you practice, the quicker you will experience lasting and reliable effects. Practice Autogenic Training regularly, at least once a day. Pick a time and stick to it.
Duration Once you are introduced to all six phrases, your training session will last up to fifteen minutes. This is very little time for the significant improvement in stress relief, stress management, and alleviation of various psychological and physiological symptoms, which Autogenic Training provides.
Nevertheless, once you experience the heaviness and the warmth in your limbs reliably, you will use the condensed phrasesof Autogenic Training thus shortening the duration of your practice.
Some weeks later, you will be able to practice just your own unique calmness word or calmness phrase. With this, your training time is down to about half a minute.
