Research on Autogenic Training

Autogenic Training is a medically-proven, . . .
Autogenic Training: a Medically Proven Relaxation Method. . . mental self-help relaxation technique designed for you to experience instant relief from stress symptoms and profound deep relaxation. There are hundreds of scientific publications on the efficiency of Autogenic Training for various physiological and psychological conditions, making Autogenic Training one of the best-documented and researched stress relief and relaxation methods.

Note: Much of the research literature is in German.

The research results provided here are, of course, not an exhaustive review but an exemplifying selection. For more information visit the website of the British Autogenic Society at www.autogenic-therapy.org.uk and/or purchase Wolfgang Linden’s book, Autogenic Training: A Clinical Guide.

Autogenic Training and anxiety:
A study in Germany examined the effects of a therapeutic treatment of patients with anxiety disorders using Autogenic Training and hypnosis.

Participants of both groups showed a decrease in anxiety, panic attacks and psychosomatic complaints.

The researchers interpreted the results as an encouragement to use Autogenic Training and hypnosis as an initial therapeutic approach for patients with anxiety disorders.

A British study examines the effectiveness of Autogenic Training for nursing students. In comparison to those who received laughter thereapy, the treatment group shows significant improvement in trait anxiety and reduction of sick leave days.

Autogenic Training and cardiovascular disorders:
An early German study showed the highly preventative effect of Autogenic Training. Compared with a group of patients with angina pectoris who received medical treatment, in the group who learned additionally Autogenic Training none suffered a heart attack after four years. In the control group, four patients had a cardiac arrest.

A more recent study, published on the website of the International Hypnosis Research Institute in 2006, examined the effects of Autogenic Training "on cardiac autonomic nervous activity in high-risk fire service workers." As a result, Autogenic Training showed to be "effective for ameliorating the disturbance of cardiac autonomic nervous activity and psychological issues secondary to PTSD."

Autogenic Training and respiratory dysfunction:
A study in Austria compared the outcome of two groups of respiratory patients with one group receiving instruction in Autogenic Training and with the other only receiving asthma education.

The autogenic training group reported significant improvements in regard to decreased anxiety and decreased frequency of asthma attacks, alleviation of asthma symptoms, and a reduction in the medication intake.

Autogenic Training and non-clinical application:
An American study examined the effects of practicing Autogenic Training on flight performance for pilots. The group that received Autogenic Training showed significant improvement in performance and a lower level of physiological arousal in distressing flying situations.

The specific effects of the six phrases of Autogenic Training:
Research on Specific Effects of Autogenic Training
Besides research on the positive effects of Autogenic Training for various clinical and non-clinical applications, many studies focused on the specific physiological changes for each of the six standard phrases of Autogenic Training.
