Autogenic Training:

Books:

Kermani, Kai. Autogenic Training: The Effective Holistic Way of Better Health. London: Souvenir Press, 1996.
After a preliminary chapter on holistic health, Dr. Kai Kermani, a British physician, leads the reader through a step-by-step process on learning Autogenic Training. The third part of his book consists of a description of the use of Autogenic Training for various medical conditions. Interestingly, the author shares in his book how Autogenic Training helped him to regain his eyesight from a progressive condition that would have left him blind.

Linden, Wolfgang. Autogenic Training: A Clinical Guide. New York: The Guilford Press, 1990.
Wolfgang Linden, a native German, teaches clinical psychology in Canada.  In the first chapter of his book, he delineates the history of and the literature on Autogenic Training, followed by a systematic manual for the practitioner as well as for the prospective trainer. The third part of his book is a review of the research on Autogenic Training providing ample evidence of the positive and favorable results of its application for a variety of conditions and disorders.

Sadigh, Micah R. Autogenic Training: A Mind-Body Approach to the Treatment of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain Syndrome. New York: The Haworth Medical Press, 2001.
Micah R. Sadigh, a Fellow of the International College of Psychosomatic Medicine and a Fellow and Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Psychotherapists and Psychodiagnosticians, utilizes Autogenic Training in the treatment of chronic pain.  The first two parts of his book lead the reader through the theoretical aspects of chronic pain and stress, and through the history and principles of Autogenic Training. The final part provides not only detailed instructions to each of the six standard phrases, but also to the advanced exercises of Autogenic Training that are seldom taught. Additionally, Sadigh covers the topic of biofeedback in conjunction with Autogenic Training, and the assistance Autogenic Training provides with insomnia and pain.

Guided Imagery:

Achterberg, Jeanne. Imagery Healing: Shamanism and Modern Medicine. Boston: Shambala Publications, Inc., 1985.
The author, professor of psychology at Saybrook Institute in San Francisco and past president of the Association of Transpersonal Psychology, follows the “golden thread” in the history of medicine, clearly revealing the eminent role imagery had throughout the ages and in various cultures. This book also contains inspiring information on the changing paradigm in science that gives imagery the place in modern medicine it deserves. The author reports impressive results on research on imagery for a variety of medical conditions in cancer patients and burn victims.

Breathing:

Lewis, Dennis. Free your Breath, Free your Life. How Conscious Breathing can Relieve Stress, Increase Vitality, and Help You Live More Fully. Boston and London: Shambala, 2004.
In the first chapter, the author introduces the reader to "seven basic categories of self-directed breathing work." He then offers many exercises to open the "breathing spaces,"  to explore the metaphysical aspect of breathing, and to "go deeper" toward healing and self-transformation. Three appendices with "core teachings and practices," "exercises for daily living," and suggestions for practice routines complete this informative book.

Suza Francina, director of the Ojai Yoga Center in Ojai, California, explains clearly how yoga can slow down or even reverse the aging process.
